The Jungshi Factory preserves a craft that dates back centuries, when paper was primarily produced for sacred Buddhist manuscripts and government records. The process is entirely organic and sustainable; the bark is harvested from the Daphne and Edgeworthia shrubs in a way that allows the plants to regrow. At the factory, you can watch the entire labor-intensive journey from boiling the bark to hand-screening the pulp into delicate sheets.
The paper produced here is famous for its durability and resistance to insects, which is why ancient Bhutanese texts remain in perfect condition today. After witnessing the production process, visitors can browse the shop for unique items like journals, greeting cards, and lampshades. It is a wonderful example of how Bhutan continues to value slow, high-quality traditional production in a fast-paced modern world.
