Full Description

Located on the banks of the Wang Chhu river, the Centenary Farmer's Market was built to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the monarchy. Historically, farmers would walk for days from remote valleys to trade their goods in Thimphu; today, the market provides a modern, multi-story facility for them to sell everything from organic vegetables to fermented yak cheese. The air is thick with the scent of dried chilies, incense, and fresh Himalayan herbs.

The market is divided into sections, including a dedicated area for local cereals, a vibrant fruit section, and an incense corner. Across a traditional cantilever bridge is the handicraft section, where you can find authentic rural tools and textiles. Visiting the market on a Friday or Saturday is a cultural immersion like no other, offering a vivid look at the biodiversity of Bhutan and the resilience of its farming communities.
