<p>The history of "Tiger's Nest" dates back to the 8th century when Guru Rinpoche is said to have flown to this site on the back of a flying tigress to meditate in a cave for three years, three months, and three days. This act was instrumental in subduing local spirits and firmly establishing Buddhism in the region. The monastery building itself was first constructed in 1692 by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye around the original meditation cave.</p> <p><br /> The hike to the monastery takes approximately 2-3 hours uphill through beautiful pine forests draped in Spanish moss. Despite a devastating fire in 1998, the monastery was completely restored to its original glory using traditional methods. For many, reaching the monastery and looking out over the Paro Valley is the spiritual highlight of their trip to Bhutan.</p>
